A Book Reading : Strengthening the Soul of your Leadership
The training methodology 'includes a reading of key chapters of this inspirational book by Ruth Hayley Barton, followed by reflections, discussions and debates.
Ruth Hayley Barton addresses issues unique to leadership in a spiritual
context. She reveals a deep understanding of the demands and challenges of being a spiritual leader and addresses such issues as the loss of 'soul' that leaders often experience simply because of the constant pressure and demands made upon spiritual leaders by their community.
She addresses what she calls 'the Conundrum of Calling', where our relationship with God is addressed, and the pressures of His calling on our lives, the difficulties that calling brings and the art of discerning what God is calling us to.
She puts the notion of 'calling' under the microscope and touches of many questions I am sure we have all asked ourselves from time to time as we grapple with this somewhat nebulous entity. Ruth takes a look at the spiritual rhythms of leadership, she also talks deeply and encouragingly about the loneliness of spiritual leaders and how we can move from isolation to community.
This is but a small taste of the interesting places Ruth takes us too where she reveals a deep insight into the unique aspects of leading a spiritual community. As I read I found many points of resonance in my own life as a priest's wife, and that of my husband's. I encourage you to give yourself the gift of listening to what she has to say in fellowship with other spiritual leaders, and to take advantage of the opportunity to debate, reflect and discuss how the chapters chosen resonate with your own experiences. I have no doubt she will provide you with answers to some of your challenges, as well as new thoughts to ponder, and encouragement and strength for the journey you are on.
